Mali’s relations with its former colonial ruler, France, has been deteriorating over the past few years. After the military junta seized power in August 2000, the tensions became even more severe. In June 2021, France decided to end joint operations with Malian forces. In February, France decided to pull out its troops after falling out with the military junta.
The ruling junta has threatened several times of late to break off its defence accords with France. On 2nd May the junta announced its decision to break off from its defence accords with France. The ruling party has accused France of violations of its national sovereignty by the French troops leading to deterioration in military cooperation with France. According to reports, French forces violated the country’s airspace several times.
The framework for France’s intervention in Mali was set up in 2014 after both the sides signed the agreement a year after French troops deployed a large force to help Mali’s armed forces stop a jihadist offensive there.
