  • Considering the role agriculture plays in Malawi’s economy, Malawi has a lot to learn from Israel. Agriculture accounts for about 35 percent of Malawi’s total wealth as measured by gross domestic product (GDP).
  •  About 200 young Malawians have arrived in Israel last week for a year-long rigorous training in agriculture fully sponsored by the Israeli government.

In 2014, the government of Israel started a programme aimed to impart training to citizens of Malawi in different fields of education, technology, agriculture, engineering, and business, etc. The most important among them is agriculture, a field where Israel has established its reputation in technology.

Despite having a small area with water scarcity and weather not naturally conducive to agriculture, Israel has a highly developed agri sector. The country is a major exporter of fresh produce and a world leader in agricultural technologies.

About 200 young Malawians have arrived in Israel last week for a year-long rigorous training in agriculture fully sponsored by the Israeli government. The initiative is also supported by Lilongwe-based Company, Smart Travel Agent that has sponsored 75% of the air ticket and cost of medical check-ups.

It is hoped that the students after their training in Israel will be able to bring the skills and significant changes in Malawi agriculture. Malawi is also hoping for such training in other sectors of health and tourism.
