In a landmark move to deepen regional digital collaboration, the Republic of Malawi has officially ratified the Constitution and Convention of the African Telecommunications Union (ATU). This ratification underscores Malawi’s commitment to fostering a unified approach to information and communication technology (ICT) development across the African continent.

The formal handover ceremony took place at the Malawi High Commission in Nairobi, Kenya. Her Excellency Callista Jennie Mutharika, High Commissioner of Malawi to Kenya, presented the official instruments of ratification to the ATU, marking a historic milestone in the country’s engagement with the Union.

Malawi’s accession represents a critical step toward achieving comprehensive ratification among the ATU’s 52 Member States. This collective milestone is essential for advancing the harmonisation of ICT policies, promoting deeper regional integration, and driving the acceleration of Africa’s digital transformation agenda.

The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) commended the bold leadership and forward-thinking vision of the Malawian government in reinforcing its dedication to building a connected, inclusive digital future for the continent. MACRA also issued a call to action for the remaining Member States, urging them to complete their ratification processes to ensure full participation in the ATU framework—an imperative for unlocking Africa’s immense digital potential.
