The president of Malawi Lazarus Chakwerea has warned against rampant corruption in the country, which has economically crippled the Southern African nation. The warning was conveyed recently during the swearing in of the new government.
Last week, the President sacked seven ministers over graft and corruption concerns. He lamented that there are many opportunities to succumb to corruption and told authorities to refrain from that and follow the rule of law. He warned that he would not allow anyone to break the law and those who engaged in corruption would be taken to task.
Last December, a minister was arrested on allegations of having received bribes from a businessman. Police also arrested a former finance minister and an ex-central bank chief on charges of corruption.
