Addressing the Malawi Investment Summit, in Lilongwe last week, the President of Malawi, Chakwera assured that his government will be able to put an end to the power outages in the country, by the end of the year. The severe damage caused by the tropical cyclone Ana early this year to Kapichira Power Plant led to the current spate of blackouts across the country. President Chakwera disclosed that it will start functioning by Christmas. The government’s goal is to raise Malawi’s power generation capacity from less than 400 megawatts to 1000 Megawattts by 2025. He also revealed that Malawi has signed an agreement to construct a 350-megawatt Hydro Power Plant at Mpatamanga financed by a consortium of financiers led by the International Finance Corporation of the World Bank Group.
The government, he said is creating several avenues for electricity-dependent economic activities also. The country is also seeking investments in ICT infrastructure that will ease transactions and expand the reach of its products into new markets by maximizing the 3000-kilometre-long national fibre backbone. Malawi is also inviting investors for developing mining infrastructure to exploit rare earth, alluvial gold, limestone and dolomite, coal, rubies, uranium, rock phosphate, talc, oil, gas, and the largest deposit of rutile in the world.
