Madagascar’s ruling party lost its parliamentary majority after independents bagged an unexpected number of seats in the recently concluded legislative elections. President Andry Rajoelina’s Tanora Malagasy Vonona party only managed to win 80 seats out of 163.
According to the data released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI), Independent candidates won 52 seats, with the main opposition getting only 25 seats. The voter turnout was again low at 48%. Following the announcement, opposition leader and former President Marc Ravalomanana accused the ruling party of violations and fraud.

President Rajoelina himself controversially won re-election last November. The vote was marred by a low voter turnout and a boycott by the opposition. That many world leaders called upon the Independent Election Commission to investigate the grievances aired by the opposition parties regarding the rigging and manipulation of election results. They called upon the state administration to uphold the rule of law.
