In a significant move, a major recruitment campaign for senior
government officials has just begun in Madagascar. The government has
asked its citizens to apply online for positions for director of
service in ministries, governor, ambassador, adviser to the president,
and ministers. It appears that the posts can be applied by people
across Africa. This is a new trend being noticed in Africa in recent
times. Some countries have come forward to open up the senior
government and private sector jobs to other nationals. For instance,
South Africa has appointed a foreigner to turnaround its debt ridden
power utility Eskom.

To improve the contribution of the mining sector to the national
economy, the Malagasy government is revising its mining code, which
will result in increase of mineral taxes. However, the draft law was
rejected by mining operators who apprehend a decline in the country’s
attractiveness if market access conditions for investors are
tightened.
