French president, Emmanuel Macron, expressed the hope that tensions with Algeria would ease. The acrimony between the two countries was triggered by restrictive visa policies announced by Paris in retaliation of discriminative policies announced by Algeria for taking back illegal immigrants sent back by France.
The proposed action spelt out by Paris precipitated the already strained relationship between the two countries. Algeria, last week, recalled its ambassador in Paris and banned French military airplanes from its airspace. France also announced a sharp cut in the number of French visas given to citizens of Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia.
During his presidency, Macron has been taking several steps to reduce tensions with Algeria, which can be traced to colonial times. But political analysts opine that France would have to take on board the younger population into confidence for easing the tensions, which have a colonial backdrop. People of younger age group can see things from a new prism as against the older genre who would be influenced by the thoughts and experiences of the exploitative colonial period. For the majority of the Algerian population, the tragedy of the Algerian war may be a historical event, which they did not live through. Recently, Macron issued an apology on behalf of France for abandoning Algerians who fought for France during the colonial war. The war led to Algeria’s independence in 1962
