M-Pesa has expanded its International Money Transfer (IMT) portfolio to include the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC). M-Pesa subscribers now can send and receive money to eight new countries in the SADC block including South Africa, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Mozambique, Swaziland and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The announcement was made last week, during the launch of a Vodacom M-Pesa campaign, promoting M-Pesa as the currency of transactions for Africa. Speaking at the event, , the minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Dr Stargomena Tax underlined the key role played by mobile money as Africa’s leading digital payment platform connecting millions across the continent and facilitating international trade and remittances. Currently, Vodacom M-Pesa through its IMT portfolio, facilitates international remittances by connecting over 200 countries worldwide. It has improved the ease of access and also reduced the cost of transfers of international remittances. International and inter-regional trade has become easier with mobile money.
M-Pesa director Epimack Mbeteni pointed out that the platform has benefitted from partnerships and innovation to grow its IMT portfolio.
