M-PESA Ethiopia Completes Integration with EthSwitch to Drive Nationwide Financial Inclusion and Seamless Interoperability

(3 Minutes Read)

M-PESA Ethiopia has officially completed its integration with EthSwitch, Ethiopia’s national payment network, marking a major step toward expanding digital financial inclusion across the country. This strategic partnership is designed to promote full interoperability between mobile money platforms and banks, enabling customers to transfer and receive funds across 15 major banks and mobile wallets, with more integrations expected in the coming weeks.

With this new capability, M-PESA users can now send money directly from their M-PESA wallets to any bank account connected to EthSwitch, or make payments to merchants who use bank-issued EthQR codes. Similarly, bank customers who do not have M-PESA accounts can now transfer money to M-PESA wallets or pay M-PESA merchants simply by scanning M-PESA EthQR codes through their existing mobile banking apps.

The service operates on EthSwitch’s secure national infrastructure, which ensures real-time transactions, data protection, and compliance with national financial regulations. Users can access this new feature directly through the M-PESA mobile app, while customers of the following financial institutions—Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, CBE Birr, Addis International Bank, Amhara Bank, Awash Bank, Bunna Bank, Cooperative Bank of Oromia (Coop Pay), Enat Bank, Lion International Bank, KAAFI Microfinance, Siinqee Bank, Siket Bank, Tsehay Bank, Wegagen Bank, and Zemen Bank—will find M-PESA listed among their transfer and payment options within their respective mobile banking applications.
