Over 20 million households in Nigeria are not using Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), according to Suresh Kumar, Managing Director, NIPCO Plc, Nigeria. He revealed this while addressing delegates at the 13th LPG conference in Abuja.
The NIPCO boss said that his company was planning to improve LPG penetration in rural areas by 50 skids, adding that with about 90% of LPG usage in the urban areas, the rural areas recorded just 10% usage. He underscored the need to deepen LPG usage in rural areas and called upon federal and state governments to help provide the basic infrastructure for rural consumers. NIPCO, he said, has invested over US$100m in the LPG value chain.

As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility, Suresh Kumar said his company donated several gas accessories to boost usage across the country. Kumar highlighted the hurdles to the gas agenda including a lack of knowledge and safety awareness about product, usage, and safe handling. Poor road conditions and underdeveloped infrastructure, including a lack of distribution channels, are major hindrances to the adoption of LPG in the country. He also noted that uncertainty in government policy on subsidy is causing a setback for investment in LPG.
