Low Voter Turnout Reported in Ivory Coast’s Presidential Election, UN Observers Emphasize Calm and Transparency

(3 Minutes Read)

During Côte d’Ivoire’s presidential election, early reports from observers indicated that voter participation appeared lower than expected, even as the voting process remained peaceful and orderly.

At a polling station in Abidjan, the station’s head told Leonardo Santos Simão, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel, that while the atmosphere was calm and operations were running smoothly, voter turnout was noticeably light. “So far, everything is going well. There have been no incidents to report. People are coming, but not in large numbers,” the official remarked.

According to on-the-ground observations, participation levels across several polling centers remained modest through the morning hours. As part of his election observation mission on October 25, UN envoy Leonardo Santos Simão visited multiple polling stations, including the Sainte-Marie High School in the Cocody district and several other locations in the Ivorian economic capital.

Following his visits, Simão commended the effective organization and calm environment observed at the sites. He also underscored the need to maintain peace, ensure transparency, and uphold public trust throughout the electoral process. Official voter turnout figures have not yet been released by Ivorian authorities.
