Locust invasion in Kenya has caught the imagination of many photographers and artists. Many of these awesome photographs have gone viral. While the locusts’ invasion had triggered fertile and creative minds, the government of Kenya is at its wit’s end. It started aerial spraying in some parts of the country to control the extensive damages caused by the locust invasion. It is not the Kenyan farmers who are bearing the brunt of a locust invasion. The damage is spreading to farmlands in neighboring Somalia and Ethiopia.
According to FAO, locusts have already destroyed 70,000 hectares (175,000 acres) of farmland in Somalia and Ethiopia, threatening food supplies in both countries. This is the worst locust invasion in 70 years for the region. The governments in the affected regions are busy procuring chemicals to ward off the locusts. The Kenyan government had procured 3,000 liters of chemicals for aerial spraying. The government is also equipping the farmers with handheld sprayers to use in their cultivating fields.
