Libya’s rival PM Fathi Bashaga has created flutters in the already murky political cauldron by announcing the coastal town of Sirte as the seat of his administration.
Bashaga was appointed by the House of Representatives based in Tobruk in February after the country failed to conduct the elections set for December last year. This had set the former interior minister on a collision course with Abdelhamid Dbeibah, the prime minister of the Government of National Unity. Dbeibah who governs from Tripoli refused to vacate office. He further dismissed Bashaga’s appointment by calling it illegal. This has led to speculations of a fresh battle between rivals to gain control over Tripoli.

Bashaga enjoys backing from eastern Libyan military strongman Khalifa Haftar. Dbeibah is supported by army units loyal to the government of National Accord which sits in Tripoli.
The north African country is slowly sliding back to anarchy with the enmity between rival factions growing. The national assembly accused Dbeibah of incompetence after the presidential election planned for last December was aborted.
