Libya’s election board on Wednesday suggested that presidential polls should take place on January 24. The decision was taken after a parliamentary committee, which adjudged that holding the elections on time this week was “impossible”
The High National Electoral Commission (HNEC) suggested after holding parleys with the House of Representatives that the first round of voting should be delayed until January 24, said a statement issued by the HNEC.
What is intriguing is the announcement of the delay in the election almost 48 hours before the scheduled date, though the decision to hold the elections and their preparations were going on for more than a year.
Experts say that announcement to delay was on the expected lines due to the insurmountable disagreements on the modalities of holding the election among the stakeholders. The conditions on the ground are not conducive for holding the massive exercise of holding the elections since Libyans have no idea who they’re voting for, what their platforms (party affiliations) etc. the basic awareness that one should have for holding the elections.
Libya has been on the verge of divisive regional politics since the fall of the long-time ruler Since the death of the long -a period of political instability.
