Libya’s Oil and Gas Minister, Mohammed Aoun, has discussed with the Maltese Ambassador to Libya, Charles Saliba, offshore energy exploration activities exploring offshore areas between the two countries.

During the meeting held in Tripoli, Saliba invited the Minister of Oil and Gas to visit Malta to discuss mechanisms of joint cooperation between the two countries.

Aoun stressed the importance of Malta for the various activities of oil companies that run offshore operations. Proximity has always been the foundation of the relationship between Malta and Libya. They are separated by just 290km of the Mediterranean Sea.  The two countries share a long and entwined history and have been trading partners for centuries.

Maltese constituted the largest foreign community in Tripoli in the past.  Greeks and Jews lived in harmony, which can still be seen in Tripoli. The Maltese’s refusal to take on Italian nationality led to their expulsion from Libya in the 1930s, leading to the dwindling of their numbers. The repressive regime under Muammar Gaddafi also witnessed the exodus of Maltese. Since the 2011 Libyan revolution, the Maltese have returned to the fore and now there is a bonhomie developing between the two.
