The Republic of Liberia has lost her full membership rights at the African Union, will now be an observer at the African Union, one without a voting right. Political analysts say that It is a matter of embarrassment that Liberia, one of the founders of the African Union, cannot today vote and have a period upon which even the observer statues may also be lost.
Over the past three years, Liberia has been struggling to submit the required reports, the core responsibilities of being a member country to the AU. According to sources, the reports were either submitted late or never. Diplomats at the AU headquarters reportedly were frustrated with the ministry of foreign affairs in Liberia and the Minister not understanding the core function of international diplomacy.
Political experts point out that the nation stands to lose the benefit of having a voice around negotiating tables. The country is rocked by major corruption scandals which have downgraded the Nation’s credit rating, limiting the capacity to borrow above a certain limit. Observer status granted by some organizations to non-members has limited privileges and role in the organization’s activities.
