Liberia and Ireland have renewed their commitment to deepen bilateral ties, strengthen trade and investment and promote democratic governance and human rights. The Irish Africa Economic Forum was held in Dublin last month with due participation by government and trade representatives from Ireland and Africa. The forum assessed and advanced strategies to promote innovation-driven trade with Africa and Ireland- through the broader European trade bloc.
Liberia’s Ambassador to London Madam Gurly Gibson-Schwarz, who is also accredited to the Republic of Ireland while presenting her credentials to the Irish President Michael Higgins expressed the hope that the two countries will break new grounds in partnership.
Ireland, she said played a critical role in peace missions in Liberia. She appreciated the role of the Irish contingent of the United Nations Peace Mission to Liberia (UNMIL) between 2003- 2007. Irish AID in Liberia positively impacted the areas of health, and education, among others. Ambassador Schwarz stressed that Liberia’s priority included democratic governance and national development particularly promoting gender equality.
President Higgins expressed optimism about the potential for greater bilateral cooperation and also praised Libera’s commitment toward climate change- especially the protection of the largest remaining rainforest in the West African sub-region.
