Lesotho to Undergo Fourth Universal Periodic Review by UNHRC

(3 Minutes Read)

Lesotho’s human rights practices will be closely examined on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, when the country undergoes its fourth Universal Periodic Review (UPR) by the United Nations Human Rights Council’s UPR Working Group. This session, which will be broadcast live from Geneva, forms part of a broader review cycle involving 14 countries, running from April 28 to May 9, 2025.

Lesotho has previously participated in three UPR reviews, held in May 2010, January 2015, and January 2020. The upcoming review will evaluate the country’s progress in implementing recommendations made in past sessions and will assess current developments related to human rights in Lesotho.

The UPR process involves contributions from various sources: a national report submitted by Lesotho, assessments by UN-appointed human rights experts and treaty bodies, and input from other stakeholders such as national human rights commissions and regional organizations. Although the 47 members of the Human Rights Council lead the process, all 193 UN Member States are entitled to engage in the review.

The UPR serves as a unique, cooperative, and peer-driven mechanism, established in April 2008, to monitor the human rights records of all UN member nations. It aims to promote accountability and foster dialogue among nations on human rights obligations and standards.

Lesotho’s delegation, which will present and defend the country’s report and progress, will be headed by Richard Ramoeletsi, the Minister of Law and Justice.
