The highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) broke out last month in South Africa’s Gauteng commercial chicken farm and later spread to other parts of the country. In response to the outbreak, many countries banned poultry and poultry products from Gauteng.
Lesotho that joined other countries in banning poultry and poultry products from South Africa on 16 April 2021 has decided to continue the ban in view of reports that the deadly avian influenza is still continuing in several parts of South Africa. Lesotho government this week clarified that the move is taken to avoid local transmissions.
To minimise the risk to Lesotho, the department of livestock services of Lesotho has instituted certain measures with immediate effect. These include banning imports of poultry and poultry products from Gauteng with immediate effect, allowing imports of poultry and poultry products from the rest of South African provinces strictly from HPAI free compartments, cancellation of all permits before or on 14 April authorising the import of poultry and poultry products from Gauteng Province, etc.
