Lesotho now has a new Prime Minister marking the end of political
wrangling that forced Thomas Thabane, immediate past prime minister
to resign.
The new incumbent is Moeketsi Majoro, who took his oath of office at
the palace of King Letsie III in the capital Maseru. He earlier served
as the finance minister of the country. Thabane, who was present at
the oath taking ceremony tendered his resignation. That ended a
political crisis triggered by his alleged involvement in the
assassination of his ex-wife in 2017.
Thabane has to fight the court case as an ordinary citizen for the
alleged killing of his former wife- Lipolelo Thabane’s– a few days
before taking office in 2017. The murder has been strongly linked to
his present wife Maesaiah Thabane. Ex-PM is also a suspect in the
case, according to police sources. .
The All Basoto Convention (ABC), the political affiliation that he
belongs to and its governing coalition have been urging him to
resign. But the octogenarian ex-Prime Minister has been resisting
the move on the ground that he was innocent and his involvement in
the murder case was framed by his opponents to oust him from the
office. He told the nation that he would demit the office in July
because of his old age.
The wily Thabane last month has ordered the army to the streets of the
capital Maseru ostensibly to restore law and order and implicated his
political enemies for carrying out unlawful conspiracies that had
greatly damaged the peace in the country. Finally, South Africa has
to mediate with the coalition government, which according to sources,
created a “dignified” exit for the prime minister.
