Kansanshi Mining PLC in Solwezi last month signed a contract with a South African cleaning company, Mr. Clean, to provide laundry services to miners, which is now becoming a controversial issue. The rebuff to the contract has come from the Cleaning Association of Zambia. It has written to Kansanshi Mining PLC to withdraw the contract given to Mr. Clean Limited, a South African owned cleaning company that came into Zambia with Shoprite in 1995.
Association President Lawrence Makumbi is taking up the cudgels for the local laundry cleaning companies. He presented a petition to mine management demanding that Kansanshi Mining Plc terminate the contract. According to the association, the contract is going against Statutory Instrument No. 22 of 2019. The statute, according to the association, makes it clear that cleaning is a preserve of Zambian owned companies.
Mr. Makumbi threatened that if the contract is not abrogated, the association will organize mass demonstrations and ultimately march to State House to air their grievances to President Hakainde Hichilema. The association further complained that it was the handiwork of some individuals who want to give business to their country folk at the expense of Zambians even when the law is clear and prevents such deals. Mr. Makumbi wanted the Laundry contract to be re-advertised and offered to a deserving Zambian owned company.
