LAM Acquires New Aircraft After a Lapse of 18 Years

Mozambique Airlines (LAM) has announced the acquisition of its first aircraft in 18 years, highlighting this milestone as the first “tangible” proof of the efficacy of its new management, which is tasked with restructuring the state-owned airline.

The aircraft is a Bombardier Q400 with a capacity to carry up to 74 passengers. It has been in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, for almost four months, undergoing maintenance checks, and is expected to arrive in Maputo this Thursday.

The Mozambican airline has been facing operational problems for several years related to a small fleet and a lack of investment, with many non-fatal incidents attributed by experts to poor aircraft maintenance. It is now undergoing a major restructuring process. LAM currently carries an average of 915 passengers a day to domestic and regional destinations.
