Lagos Leather Fair 5 (LLF5), a premier leather show in Nigeria, is scheduled to be held on 11- 12 June 2022. To sensitize the show, the Founder of Lagos Leather Fair, and Creative Director of Femi Handbags, Mrs. Femi Olayebi, held a press conference recently in Lagos. She explained the lack of skilled artisans in the industry, which was hindering the growth potential of the leather sector. The industry is also faced with myriads of challenges ranging from lack of infrastructure, logistics, and other bottlenecks, hindering leather manufacturing concerns.

Calling for upscaling the skillset of the leather industry, Femi Olayebi called on the government to do the needful to take the sector to its desired heights. She said that there was a lack of variety of products and the country was yet to invest in the value addition of its endowed natural resources.  There should be efforts to promote backward integration, for sourcing raw materials locally.

The LLF5 is a yearly retail showcase of West Africa’s leading leather brands. The annual event has been held since 2017. The primary aim is to create awareness of the potential value of the leather industry by providing a platform for leather designers to showcase their talent. The platform also provides help for finding sustainable solutions and buyers to move the industry forward.

Nigeria is one of the highest producers of leather and finished leather products in Africa. The Nigerian leather industry has the potential to generate over 1 billion dollars by 2025, according to an estimate. The leather value chain is extensive to include animal husbandry, tanneries, finished leather products, and leather products marketing.

Nigeria’s leather and leather products industry currently employs over 750,000 workers with about 500,000 workers in the finished leather goods sector. Exports are in the order of US$272 million. Nigeria’s semi-finished and finished leather products are exported to Italy, Spain, India, South Asia, and China. Shoes, belts, bags, and folders are largely traded in West Africa and other parts of Africa.
