Labour unions marched across Nigeria to protest against the cost of living under the West African nation’s new president. They called for the government to improve social welfare interventions to reduce hardship.

Labour unions marched across Nigeria to protest against the cost of living under the West African nation’s new president. They called for the government to improve social welfare interventions to reduce hardship. In Abuja, hundreds of workers watched closely by police, marched down a main thoroughfare chanting against the subsidy cuts. The unions said the economic incentives announced this week by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu to ease hardship were not enough and accused the government of failing to act quickly to ease the effect of some of his policies. The prices of gas and other essentials have been doubled.

The demonstrations were organized by the Nigerian Labour Congress, the umbrella body of the unions. Large numbers of protestors were reported in Lagos and the capital Abuja, mostly constituting government workers.
