The President of South Africa will be the first Head of the state to be hosted by King Charles III after his ascension to the throne in September. South Africa also will be the first commonwealth country to be invited to the UK after King Charles took over.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will be in the United Kingdom for three days. Buckingham Palace has confirmed that Ramaphosa has accepted Charles’s invitation for a state visit from November 22 to 24.  The South African President will be accompanied by the First Lady Tshepo Motsepe.

State visits to the UK have been a regular feature of former Presidents of South Africa including Nelson Mandela, Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma.

King Charles has visited South Africa several times. He was there at Mandela’s funeral in 2013, when he lamented that the world would be a “poorer place” without a leader like Mandela, who led South Africa’s transition from apartheid to multi-ethnic democracy. The visit takes place at a crucial time when Ramaphosa is facing investigations by the coubtry’s Parliament. The allegations include kidnapping, bribery, money laundering, and concealing a crime.
