Former Kenyan President and mediator Uhuru Kenyatta will travel to Tigray’s capital Mekele with the African Union’s monitoring and verification team to check on the implementation of the Ethiopian peace deal.
Kenyatta said the parties involved have all concurred and agreed to give the monitoring and verification team of the African Union full access and responsibility for implementing the elements of the peace accord. Kenyatta also hinted that all foreign forces would be out of the Tigray region; but did not specify any time for that.

The international community has welcomed the truce between the federal forces of Ethiopia and Tigray rebels, which took a heavy toll on human lives and led to the dislocation of millions of people. The UN relief measures have started reaching the war-ravaged Tigray region. Analysts say that it will be a herculean task for the AU to maintain peace in the region since the animosities between the two regions can surface at any time. Massive development efforts are important to bring back the Tigray region to normalcy.
