One start-up in Kenya’s capital Nairobi – Roam Motors- is working to tackle climate change and mobility by curbing air pollution. It has innovated an effective and cost-friendly way to curb air pollution.

The start-up produces electric motorcycles that run on two rechargeable batteries, which can be charged at any charging point.  Each battery can drive for around 90 km when fully charged. That allows the motor vehicle to travel 180 km at a stretch without any hindrance. The charging time is close to four hours.

The cost of the bike ranges from US$1,550 upwards depending on the client’s demands. The vehicle is ideally suited to address the air pollution problem in Nairobi. The company has decided to make electric motorcycles to curb the problem. Around 20,000 motorbikes are imported into the country every month.  Roam Air electric motorcycle is a fully electric motorcycle with a removable battery, which can be charged like mobile phones.

Manufacturing electric vehicles can be costly.  But the company is able to produce the bikes at competitive prices because it manufactures the frame of the motorbike. This gives them the right to use their frame without paying royalties. However, they have to import other necessary parts and assemble them in Kenya.

The Kenyan government extends tax reliefs to companies that produce locally to encourage the building of local capacities for manufacturing, particularly electric vehicles, which can take thousands of electric motorcycles off the roads thereby reducing carbon footprint.
