Kenya’s president-elect William Ruto has pledged to extend a hand of “brotherhood” to his rivals after the Supreme Court upheld his victory in the August 9 presidential poll. The losing candidate Raila Odinga challenged the outcome on technical grounds, maintaining that due process was not followed. The supreme court upheld the decision in favour of Ruto, clearing his way to ascendancy as the president.
William Ruto said that he would be the president of all and not the president of the party he represented and that way, his policies would be inclusive aiming to uplift all irrespective of the party they represent or the ideology that they believe.
The election campaign was dominated by mudslinging and the spread of fake news. Many observers feared that the dispute over the result would boil over into violence. Ruto struck a conciliatory tone, saying his government would work “to make Kenya a country for everyone”.
