Kenya’s new President William Ruto named a 22- member cabinet, which includes a former Central Bank of Kenya governor as the finance minister. Of the total 22 cabinets, only seven are women as against his promise during electioneering that he would bring gender parity in the formation of the government. The appointment of the Central Bank’s former Governor as the finance minister is indicative of Ruto’s mission to put the ailing economy on track.
Kenya, the fastest growing economy in East Africa, is facing major challenges, like soaring fuel and commodity prices. Inflation hit 8.5% in August, a five-year high. The Kenyan shilling is steadily eroding values. External debt is mounting. There has been a six-fold increase in debt since 2013.

Lawyer Abraham Kithure Kindiki, who defended Mr. Ruto in the country’s Supreme Court after appeals filed by opponent Raila Odinga, is now appointed to the Ministry of Home Affairs, while Aden Barre Duale has been appointed to the Ministry of Defence. The cabinet secretary is former Vice President Musalia Mudavadi. Simon Chelugi is the only minister who served under former President Uhuru Kenyatta to be accommodated in Ruto’s cabinet. However, he was moved from the Ministry of Labour to the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises, a less important portfolio.
