Kenyan President William Ruto met with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed recently to discuss bilateral cooperation and deepen the economic and strategic ties. Ruto on his first visit to Ethiopia, after being elected as the president, has discussed with Ethiopian strongman Abiy Ahmed a number of issues. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed had taken part in the inauguration ceremony of President William Ruto held in Nairobi on September 13, 2022.
Ethiopia and Kenya have a long-standing friendship and cooperation. Amidst the prevailing tension in the Tigray region, the meeting assumes some importance. Reports indicate that the two leaders have discussed the issue to sort out the contentious issues between the parties involved in the conflict. In an earlier statement, President Ruto had affirmed that his administration would play an active role in brokering peace between the warring groups.

Importantly, the prolonged conflict has engaged world attention. The UN has expressed concerns about the poor rehabilitation work being carried out in the conflict area due to the perpetration of violence. The number of people dead in the conflict has crossed several hundred; thousands were injured and millions had fled the conflict areas to safer places in neighbouring countries, where they are facing problems of shelter and non – availability of basic necessities of life. Rehabilitation agencies cannot reach out to the places where refugees are camped because of heavy shelling and denial of permission by the warring groups to access such areas. The African Union has organized high-level talks in South Africa on the protracted conflict. Kenya’s former President Uhuru Kenyatta has agreed to be part of the mediator’s team to broker peace.
