The Kenyan government has provided 1.2 tonnes of cotton seeds valued at Sh4.5 to farmers in Siaya County to promote cotton farming. This donation, made by the state department of Trade and Industry, will be distributed throughout the county and was received by key officials, including the county executive for agriculture, Sylvester K’okoth, and chief officer for Agriculture, Elizabeth Adongo.
After receiving the seeds, K’okoth praised the national government’s support, noting that it would assist the Siaya county government in achieving its goal of creating jobs through agricultural value chains. He mentioned that cotton has been identified as a transformative value chain that can enhance local livelihoods. Adongo added that the donation would help farmers lower their production costs.
Stanley Koskei, the director of industries in the Ministry of Trade and Industry, who led the team, emphasised the government’s commitment to increasing cotton cultivation. He mentioned that Siaya is set to receive an additional 50 tonnes of new cotton seeds imported from Cameroon. Ng’etich, the Siaya deputy county commissioner, stated that this donation aligns with the government’s Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) and encouraged farmers to leverage the seeds for life improvements.

Local cotton farmers, including Claris Awino and Livingston Ouma, expressed their gratitude for the donation and urged their peers to adopt cotton farming, noting that they are now achieving favourable market prices.
