Ahead of Brexit, Kenya-based Global Tea Commodities Company has bagged a supply contract with leading UK supermarkets. The retailers require two containers of packaged tea a day, an equivalent of 20,000 kilogrammes worth Sh4.6 million at the current price of Sh230 a kilogramme. Global Tea Commodities company is a well-established company and, one of the largest buyers at the Mombasa Tea Auction. Through its brand, Kericho Gold brand, the company has been doing value-addition for the local market through its flavoured teas, which are popular with the youth. The company is planning to build a Sh800 million facility in Mombasa to boost its global trading and meet the increased order.

The UK is a major re-exporter of tea. It sources the commodity from Kenya for resale to other countries like Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Stakeholders in the tea sector have been worried that Brexit will hit the volumes of tea sold to Britain as the UK leaves the European Union (EU) bloc. According to sources, EU had agreed to involve Ireland remaining in the EU’s single market and customs union, leaving Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) free to strike trade deals.
