A Kenyan Court further extended the stay for sending Kenyan police to Haiti. It may be recalled that Kenya’s cabinet approved the deployment of 1,000 police officers as part of a multinational force. A week ago, the Kenyan court had first stayed the decision based on the appeal by the Opposition Party leader.

The force aims to provide operational support to the Haitian National Police of Haiti, including building its capacity. The UN passed a resolution to this effect on October 2, 2023. It also spelled out how the mission would be financed, which is largely through contributions including that of the United States. However, Kenya’s leadership in the mission and its involvement have been criticised at home.

Earlier this month, the country’s High Court granted an interim injunction in a case brought by opposition politician Ekuru Aukot.  He argued the deployment was unconstitutional. The case hearing will continue on Nov. 9, according to Aukot. Haiti’s Prime Minister called for international help over the gang-related insecurity in his country. More than 2,400 people were reported killed between January and mid-August of this year, according to UN statistics. Haiti’s National Police who are reportedly outnumbered and outgunned have struggled in its fight against gangs who terrorize the population.
