Students at Zawadi Yetu Academy in Mogotio Baringo County in East Kenya are embarking on a massive project to spread computer literacy in villages and far-flung areas. The person who initiated the project is Nelly Cheboi, who grew up in Mogotio village. She had never touched a laptop in her days in Kenya. She became familiar with computers only when she travelled to the US on a scholarship for higher studies.
But her exposure to the digital world reminded her about thousands of people back in her country who did not have the access to computers. While coming back to her native village, she started a programme that teaches kids vital IT skills. So, she founded Techlit Africa. For that, she uses old computers donated by companies and big institutions.
Cheboi offers computers for free to local schools. She collects computer donations from companies and institutions and brings them to Kenya and refurbishes them before being given to schools. Her organization also trains youth in the community to make them computer savvy and employable.

TechLit Africa is targeting remote areas where people rarely have access to computers or electronics. Her efforts are designed to make Kenya a digitally strong country to reap the benefits that are unfolding. The programme is running in 13 schools across Kenya, so far.
