The Kenyan ministry of agriculture cautioned Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) and the parliamentary committee on trade to take penal actions against manufacturers of substandard animal feeds in the country.

Speaking at the Kenya Cooperative Creameries kiganjo factory in Nyeri, Cabinet secretary in-charge of agriculture Peter Munya said that the dairy sector is affected by an influx of substandard animal feeds and concentrates on sale in the market.

The dairy sector is not realizing its desired results due to the sub-standard feeds consumed by the animals. The cabinet secretary urged KEBS and parliamentary committee to ensure that prescribed standards are maintained and those who do not conform to the order be penalized.

A healthy dairy animal consuming quality feeds and concentrate can produce up to forty litres a day. But presently, the yield per animal is as low as ten litres per day. Dairy farmers complain that with that quantum of yield, they are incurring losses. Authorities feel that with proper enforcement of the standards, farmers can hit their target
and realize profits from their dairy farming. Kenya has set aside 1.8 billion shillings for modernization of KCC factories countywide starting with Kiganjo which will be equipped with machines for instant powdered milk.
