- The concerned oil and gas companies include Zahara Oil and Gas, which had been allocated two blocks, Octant Energy, Simba Africa Rift Energy, A-Z Petroleum Products, Milio/Castac Oil and Lamu Oil and Gas who were exploring in the Lamu Basin on the Indian Ocean territory.
In a recent gazette notification, Petroleum, and Mining Secretary of Kenya, John Munyes has announced termination of the contracts of six oil and gas explorers. Under Section 10 and 11 of the Petroleum Act, the CS has the authority to issue notices for termination of contracts where a contractor has failed to meet their obligations. According to the Gazette notice issued by Mr Munyes, the contractors had defaulted on the agreed obligations under their respective contracts. The law requires the minister to notify the contractor in writing.
The concerned oil and gas companies include Zahara Oil and Gas, which had been allocated two blocks, Octant Energy, Simba Africa Rift Energy, A-Z Petroleum Products, Milio/Castac Oil and Lamu Oil and Gas who were exploring in the Lamu Basin on the Indian Ocean territory. Kenya has four petroleum exploration basins, Lamu, Anza, Mandera and Tertiary Rift Basi. Though Oil and gas exploration began in 1956, a breakthrough came only in March 2012 with the discovery of oil in Lokichar, Turkana County.
