Kenya has sought the abolition of a seven percent tax levied on its avocado exports to China. Only last week the country was allowed to start shipping the product to China after years of waiting. Fifteen Kenyan firms were cleared for shipping avocado to Chinese markets after the Chinese agencies gave them a clean bill of health. So far, the regulatory requirements allowed local farmers to only ship frozen fruits based on fears that fresh ones would see the export of foreign pests to their country.

Kenya feels that the tax will cut down the overall margin of the Avocado farmers from the export of the fruit. The regulator pointed out that the tax will also invariably increase the price of its Avocados and make them less competitive in the market. The regulator pleaded that China should consider removing the levy as it has done with other countries such as Peru.
