Kenya reacted sharply at the United Kingdom’s decision to put the East African country under its coronavirus travel ‘red list’. Kenya termed it as ‘discriminatory’ and lacked ‘logic and scientific knowledge of the cause of the disease.
Recently, the UK announced new travel restrictions against travelers from Kenya. While imposing the travel restrictions, the UK authorities said that it had established the South African coronavirus variantmwas fast spreading locally in Kenya. By virtue of the decision, as reported by www.trendsnafrica.com recently, beginning April 9 Kenyans or anybody transiting through Kenyan airports is banned from entering the UK. Nairobi also retailed by measures banning passenger flights originating or transiting through UK airports for a month. Besides, passengers from the UK will be required to produce negative Covid-19
certificates and valid Covid-19 vaccine certifications. However, cargo flights are exempt from the ban with restrictions placed on crew members.
Kenya Airways, the country’s flag carrier, scheduled two repatriation flights to carry nationals and other passengers home before the measures were put in place on 4 and 8 April. Kenya last week imposed lockdown in Nairobi and four other counties under a new lockdown following an uptick in cases. Kenya has had 138,988 coronavirus cases so far, while Britain logged 4,360,000 cases. Much of the heart burning of Kenya is due to the excellent relations it shares with Britain. Importantly, the two countries inked a lucrative trade deal which will see Kenyan exporters access the UK market under a duty-free, quota-free arrangement. British businesses will have unrestricted access to the Kenyan market. Trade between the two countries reached US$1.8bn in 2019. Te UK also has put several African countries in the travel red list.
