Kenya GDP contracted by 0.3pc in 2020- Economic Survey 2021

After a four months delay, prompting a hue and cry in the Parliament, the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics has published the annual Economic Survey. The report that is usually released annually in April captures the performance of the economy.

The Economic Survey reported that due to the economic set back caused by the Pandemic, Kenya’s GDP contracted by 0.3pc in 2020, against a 5pc growth in 2019. After rebasing the economy to 2016 base year from 2009 the GDP rose to Ksh10.75 trillion  ($97.8 billion).The Agriculture, forestry and fishing sector grew by 4.8 percent and Construction sector rose by 11.8 per cent compared to a 5.6 per cent growth in 2019.Cement consumption soared by 20.3 percent while Financial sector recorded a growth of 5.6 percent compared to 6.9 percent rise in 2019. Supported by the manufacturing sector, the economy is expected to grow by 6pc in 2021.
