Kenya-China Chamber of Commerce has been set up by Chinese and Kenyan traders to consolidate and strengthen bilateral ties. It is hoped that the chamber will act as effective lobbying machinery and connect businessmen from both sides for mutual benefit. It will also act as a platform for business people to learn from one another and increase trust in each other.
Launching the Chamber in Nairobi, Trade Principal Secretary Johnson Weru said the Chamber will include registered Kenyan and Chinese firms and aims at improving contacts between the two sides, beyond government channels.
Trade between china and Kenya has been growing over the past decade, but the trade balance has been largely in favour of China. Chinese exports are about Sh400 billion a year, with Kenyan exports only a tenth of this value to China. The low export volume is attributed to a limited export basket, little value addition and the stringent conditions of Beijing.
