US Vice President Kamala Harris will be on a week -long visit to Africa to strengthen the US ties with the continent. Her visit is scheduled for the end of March. Analysts opine that the spate of visits by the US high ranking officials including t Kamala Harris is designed as a part of the Africa outreach program being implemented by the US to counter the influence of China and Russia in the region
Recently, first lady Jill Biden and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen visited various countries in Africa. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is going this week to the continent. President Joe Biden is expected to travel to Africa later this year.
Harris is the first Black vice president in U.S. history and the first woman to hold the position in the world. That way, her visit will send the right signals to the continent, which is touted as the growth hub of the 21st century and beyond. Harris will be in Ghana from March 26 to 29, then in Tanzania from March 29 to 31. Her final stop will be Zambia, on March 31 and April 1. Zambia has a special significance to Harris. Her maternal grandfather worked in Zambia years ago. She visited the southern African country as a young girl.
Harris’ agenda in the visiting countries will include promoting democracy, climate adaptation, women’s economic empowerment and food security. Apart from heads of states of the countries she will be visiting, Harris will meet young leaders, business representatives, entrepreneurs, and members of the African Diaspora.
