US Vice President Kamala Harry’s visit to Ghana has been significant not necessarily as a US outreach program to the West African country but also for her promise to help the beleaguered country to come out of the economic mess it has been slipped into.
While the first day’s visit to Ghana was significant for the US$ 100 million aid she announced for the country, subject to the approval of Congress, on the second day, she would be making statements on how the two countries can cooperate in the future, in areas including opportunities ahead. Excerpts of the speech, provided by her office, indicate that she would touch on innovation and entrepreneurship. She would also refer to the need for promoting the private sector in Ghana.
The US Vice President will pledge a new era of partnership with Africa when she speaks from Black Star Gate, which commemorates Ghana’s independence from colonialism. Nana Akufo-Addo has already urged the US to make his country a hub for US investment to generate employment and income for the people. While urging so, the host country’s head of state might have had at the back of his mind the difficult situation being faced by a number of countries in the continent, the continuous failure of the public sector companies, and how the governments are pumping hard-earned resources to keep them alive. Kenya is keen to change the dynamics of commanding heights of the public sector.
Importantly, Harris also would visit the historic Cape Coast Castle, the iconic fort on the seaside where enslaved Africans were loaded to the Americas to work as slaves during the colonial period. Harris is expected to make a speech there, which can hark back to the sufferings of the enslaved people. Being a coloured person, she could easily connect with those events. Harris’s mother was an Indian, and her father was a Jamaican. She represents how hard work, determination, and zeal can help the people in the US to come to the top despite their colour and creed.

After Ghana, Harris would proceed to Tanzania and Zambia, where hectic activities are awaiting her. The visit of Harris to the African countries is an exercise being conducted by the US to counterbalance the growing influence of China and Russia. West European countries’ clout in the continent, following from the colonial period, is at stake now. Sahel countries, where there was a considerable military presence, especially France, are now urging the complete withdrawal of the troops.
