Julius Nyerere International Airport opens new terminal

In a bid to position the country as a regional aviation hub,a new world class terminal was opened last week at Tanzania’s Julius Nyerere International Airport, It will handle international flights and is expected to serve up to six million passengers per year.

The $282 million facility was inaugurated by President John Magufuli last week. It was reported by official circles that the construction of the terminal was done through local funding. The Julius Nyerere International Airport’s Terminal I has an annual capacity of 500,000 passengers. Terminal II has an estimated capacity of1.5 million-passengers. The addition of the new terminal, is expected to make Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) one of the busiest hubs in Africa. The new terminal is also expected to increase freight volumes, leading to higher revenue collection according to Tanzania’s Transport Minister Isaack Kamwelwe.
