In line with the commitment made by the Japanese Prime Minister to Ethiopian PM Abe in his talks last April Government of Japan has contributed 30.24 USD million through the World Food Programme to support the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia to meet relief food needs. Causes such as COVID-19, desert locusts, drought and flooding, etc has led to a severe food crisis in Ethiopia.
According to the Japan embassy in Ethiopia, the assistance will be routed through the Government’s National Disaster Risk Management Commission. The contribution is expected to give relief to over 1.6 million people in the regions of Afar, Amhara, Oromia, Southern Nations Nationalities and Peoples, Sidama and Tigray in the framework of the 2020 Humanitarian Response Plan.
The announcement came through a virtual launching event in Addis Ababa with the National Disaster Risk Management Commission, the Embassy of Japan and World Food Program. The Japanese donation comes at a critical time for Ethiopia’s food security. World Food Program has transferred 72,440MT of wheat to the government warehouses. The National Disaster Risk Management Commission will forward the wheat to distribution points. The Japanese Embassy in Ethiopia said that the contribution reflected Japan’s commitment to supporting African Development particularly through the Tokyo International Conference on African Development Initiative.
