According to a press statement by the Egyptian Ministry of International Cooperation, the Japanese Ambassador to Cairo Oka Hiroshi has conveyed that Japan is keen to expand investments in the fields of blue hydrogen and ammonia through Toyota Tsushu Corporation. The company already has operations in the energy sector in Egypt. The ambassador disclosed that such partnership opportunities have been discussed with the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources. The ambassador’s statements came after the envoy’s submission of his letter of credence to President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi last week.

During the diplomat’s meeting with the Minister Rania al-Mashat, the scope for expanding cooperation in joint developmental projects was also discussed. The minister pointed out that such collaborations currently included sectors of healthcare, electricity, transportation, navigation, education, higher education, and irrigation worth $2.8 billion. He revealed that Japan has supported Egypt to acquire vaccine doses worth $250 million from COVAX apart from providing grants to procure medical equipment.

To promote economic cooperation between the two countries, the minister and the ambassador agreed to expand the annual economic talks between both states on the strategic level and not just on the technical one. The Japanese ambassador pointed out that the eighth Tokyo International Conference of African Development (TICAD) to be hosted by Tunisia on August 26-28 will open new avenues for cooperation between Japan and Africa.
