Ivory Coast’s electoral commission has started announcing the preliminary result of the presidential vote. Incumbent President Allassane Ouattara is expected to win, especially in the north of the country, which is considered to be his strong-hold. Also, a boycott of two presidential candidates would also help him to clinch the position without major challenges, according to political analysts.
President Ouattara obtained 98% of the votes in Korhogo, the northern capital, where 88% of the eligible voters cast their votes. This is first set of results coming from the West African country.
In the meantime, the opposition calls Ouattara’s bid for a third term unconstitutional. Opposition leaders, particularly FPI’s leader Pascal Affi N’Guessan, called for a civil transition and reinforced their stand that they no longer recognized Alassane Ouattara as the Ivory Coast’s president. The RHDP ruling party of the president has meanwhile “warned” the opposition “against any attempt aimed at destabilization of the country.
