The Ivorian government reached an agreement with trade unions recently for a “five-year social truce” in the public sector in exchange for increased bonuses and payment of salary arrears to civil servants. By signing this agreement, the government will have to provide a payment of 1,100 billion CFA francs (1.6 billion euros) to 254,000 state employees for the period 2022-27.

Prime Minister Patrick Achi at the signing ceremony of the agreement in Abidjan said the agreement was aimed at calming the social climate and constituted an indispensable basis for accelerating the transformation of the economy.  The unions have pledged to respect the social truce agreed upon for the stability of the country. It (agreement) extends the 2017-22 agreement worth 357 billion CFA francs (545 million euros), signed following an extensive social movement in January 2017 in the civil service. Recently, some government officials in departments like education, health, energy, and security forces – had gone on strike to demand, among other things, salary increases and the payment of arrears.
