Ivory Coast has been ranked the fourth largest rubber producer in the world (World rubber world rubber statistics however points out that China is the fourth largest producer as of 2019). The ranking has been done by  the Association of Natural Rubber Professionals (Apromac), a national organization.  Thailand is the world’s largest rubber producer, with 4.85 million tonnes, followed by Indonesia as of 2019.

Ivory Coast, though fourth in the pecking order of  rubber production in the world, its production is far below that of Malaysia, Apromac points out. . In 2020, the country  produced nearly one million tonnes of natural rubber, which could meet  nearly 80% of the continent’s latex requirements. Since 2005, the West African country has been posting smart increases in rubber production. That year, its production was mere 170,000 tonnes, which has been steadily increasing since then.

Now Ivory Coast is aiming at increasing production to top the world in rubber production. There is a steady demand for its products from the world market. Now, Asia is the largest market for its products replacing Europe, which was the case a few years ago.

Presently, the country is aiming at increasing the acreage of rubber plantation as also the number of trees, thereby increasing its production to 2 million tonnes, almost double of what it is now. Frequent fluctuations in the international price of rubber are a major concern of the farmers. It is the largest exporter of rubber in Africa and the top destinations of exports are China, Thailand, Malaysia, Europe and America.
