The reopening of land borders between the Ivory Coast and its neighbours was greeted with joy by the citizens. www.trendsnafrica.com has reported about this a few days ago and how it is going to favourably impact trade among countries in the region. The border was closed in March 2020 due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Ivory Coast shares borders with Liberia, Guinea, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Ghana and there was a heavy movement of goods and people within the countries. The shopkeepers are happy about the reopening of the borders since it would lead to increased business for them.  With the closure of the borders, people could no longer come and buy products from each other’s countries. For instance, a large number of customers from Ghana used to visit the Ivory Coast to buy many things and vice versa.  The absence of such border trade had affected the traders mostly as also customers, who were to part with higher prices for products because of shortages. Also, they had to traverse long distances to procure goods and sometimes also.

Ivorian sea and air borders reopened after a few months, restoring normal traffic.  But land borders remained closed until now. Ivory Coast had the least number of casualties during the pandemic as compared to other countries in the continent. This could be due to timely steps being taken by the Ivorian administration to curb the spread of the pandemic.
